Version history
Docs keeps a full version history for every document. Versions come from manual snapshots, automatic saves, publishes, reverts, and applied proposals — and any version can be previewed or restored.
What creates a version
Version type | When it's created |
|---|---|
Manual | You click Create snapshot and optionally label it ("v1 sent to review"). |
Auto | Automatic saves and content repair create rolling versions. |
Publish | Each publish stamps a version of the exact content that went live. |
Revert | Restoring an old version first records the current content, so a revert is itself reversible. |
Proposal apply | Applying an agent change proposal snapshots the pre-proposal content. |
Using the history rail
Open a document and click the History tab in the right rail.
Browse versions newest-first; each entry shows type, author, word count, label, and time.
Preview any version to compare it against the current draft.
Click Restore to revert the document to that version — with a confirmation, since it replaces current content.
Labeling and audit
Version labels are editable, so snapshots can carry human context.
Authors are shown for every version; combined with block-level last-edited-by data, you can always answer "who changed this, and when?"
Tips
Create a labeled snapshot before big restructures or before an agent makes sweeping edits.
Reverts are safe: the pre-revert content is preserved as a new version, so you can always undo the undo.
