Sprint planning
The sprint planning workspace lets you review backlog work alongside sprint columns, so you can decide what to take on next.
Open the planning workspace
Go to Sprints.
Select the sprint you want to plan.
The workspace shows planning columns for the available sprints and a Backlog area for tasks that are not assigned to a sprint. If you work across teams, choose the relevant team first — this keeps the backlog and sprint context focused on that team's work.
Groom the backlog
Use the backlog as the holding place for tasks that are not yet scheduled into a sprint. Review a task before you pull it in:
Make the title and expected outcome clear.
Add or confirm the owning team and workflow details.
Set an estimate, priority, owner, and labels where relevant.
If more work remains to review, load more backlog items. Grooming does not require moving every item — the goal is to make the next sprint's choices obvious.
Pull tasks into a sprint
Move a backlog task into the appropriate sprint column to assign it to that sprint.
The task leaves the backlog and is counted with that sprint.
You can also use Create task in a sprint column to create a task already assigned to that sprint, or Link tasks to move existing tasks into it from a dialog. This is useful for newly discovered work that must land in the current sprint.
Tip: Only pull in tasks that are ready to plan. Work that is unclear or lower priority is better left in the backlog.
Plan with capacity in mind
As you add tasks, use the sprint's totals and the work's estimates to judge whether the commitment is realistic. A sprint can include tasks from different epics, so look beyond one epic when checking the overall load.
Treat the workspace as a planning surface, not a promise that every backlog item must be scheduled. Keeping lower-priority or unclear work in the backlog gives your team room to make deliberate tradeoffs.
