Follow work to get updates
When you follow tasks automatically, how to follow epics and objectives, and how to get fewer updates.
Following an item tells Helpin you want to hear about it. When something changes on work you follow, such as a new comment or a status change, you get a notification. This article explains when you follow something automatically and how to follow or unfollow epics and objectives yourself.
When you follow a task automatically
You start following a task when you:
create it;
are assigned to it;
comment on it.
This way, the people involved in a task hear about changes without having to set anything up.
Follow an epic or objective
Open the epic or objective.
In the header, select Follow.
The button changes to Following. To stop getting updates, select Following again.
What followers are notified about
As a follower, you can receive these types of notification for the item:
Notification type | Example |
|---|---|
Comments and replies | Someone comments on a task you follow |
Status changes | A task you follow changes status, priority or blocking state |
Following | Other updates on work you follow |
Some notifications reach you whether or not you follow the item. For example, you're notified when someone assigns work to you or mentions you.
You never get notifications for your own changes.
Get fewer follow notifications
If you follow a lot of work and the updates are too much, you don't need to unfollow everything. In Settings > Notifications, on the Workspace tab, you can turn off Following, Status changes or Comments and replies in the app, by email, or both. Mentions and assignments keep working.
You can also switch your email frequency to a daily or weekly digest so that follow updates arrive in one email. See Email notifications and digests.
