Edit a custom agent and manage its versions

After you create a custom agent, you refine it through versions. A version is a saved set of the agent's instructions, skills, tools, working areas, run mode and AI profile. One version is active at a time, and new runs use it.

This page covers what's specific to custom agents. For what each setting means, see Agent settings reference.

Open the agent

  1. Go to Automation > Agents.

  2. Select the custom agent, or choose Edit from its More agent actions menu.

The agent opens on the Versions tab. The list on the left shows every version, and the one in use has an Active badge. When you create an agent, its settings become its first version.

Edit a version

  1. Select the version in the list.

  2. Under Version details, change the System prompt, Available skills, Allowed tools, Working areas or Run mode.

  3. Select Save.

If you edit the active version, the changes apply to the agent's new runs as soon as you save. Runs that have already started keep the settings they started with.

The AI profile at the bottom of the tab is saved with the version. Save the version to apply a new profile to new runs.

The agent's name, icon and Who can use this agent setting are chosen when you create it and aren't part of a version.

Try changes safely with a new version

To test a bigger change without affecting current runs:

  1. Select New, or open a version's menu and choose Duplicate.

  2. Enter a Version label and an optional Description, then select Create custom version.

  3. Edit the new version and select Save.

  4. When you're ready, select Set as active.

To roll back, select the previous version and choose Set as active again. Set as active is unavailable while you have unsaved changes.

Check how the agent is doing

  • Analytics shows run trends and the last five runs with their status, target, tokens and time.

  • Limits shows token use this month and in total. See Agent usage and limits.

Use these to spot a version that fails more often, then compare it with an earlier version.

Delete a custom agent

  1. On the Agents page, open the agent's More agent actions menu.

  2. Select Delete.

  3. Confirm.

Deleting is permanent. If flows use the agent, the confirmation lists how many, and those flows are deleted too. Move a flow to another agent first if you want to keep it.

Built-in agents work differently

Built-in agents have a read-only default version maintained by Helpin. To change one, you create a custom version of it. See Customize built-in agents with versions.
