Built-in tools overview
Helpin includes a set of built-in tools that agents use to read and change work in your workspace, research the web, and work in code repositories. This page summarizes the tool categories so you can decide which tools an agent needs. For the full, current list with inputs, open the tool catalog.
Workspace tools
These tools work with records inside Helpin. They follow the permissions and modules available in your workspace.

Docs | Search, read and write documents, manage spaces and collections, and propose changes for review. |

Support, Support / Discovery, Support / Triage | Read conversations, draft replies, update status, and assign, tag, move or link conversations. |
Interaction tools
The Interaction category lets an agent involve a person while it works. An agent can ask you a question, request your approval, ask you to review findings, share a plan, or publish a preview for you to check. See Respond to approvals and questions during a run.
Skills tools
The Skills category lets an agent find and read the skills attached to it. See Skills and the skill catalog.
Research tools
Category | What agents can do |

Web Search | Search the web and fetch or crawl public pages. |
Browser | Open pages in a temporary browser session, interact with them and take screenshots. Use these for pages that need sign-in or clicks; use Web Search tools for public pages. The browser session closes when the run ends, so sign-ins don't carry over between runs. |
Repository tools
These tools let coding agents work in a checked-out copy of a repository.

Filesystem | List directories and read or write files. |
Code Analysis | Search a repository and find, read and trace code symbols. |
Commands | Run commands in the repository workspace. |

Coding agents and browser tools are not available in the Community edition.
External tools
If your workspace connects external MCP servers, their tools appear in the External MCP category. See External MCP servers.
Choosing tools
Give an agent only the tools it needs for its job. A support-drafting agent, for example, needs Support and Docs tools but not Git tools. Tools that change data may require approval, depending on the agent's approval policy. See Give agents tools and skills.
